Bandai 1/144 HG RX-78-02 Gundam [EFF Prototype Origin Ver]

The RX-78-02 Gundam is the Granddaddy of all mobile suit featured in the Universal Century of the Mobile Suit Gundam story line. It was piloted by Amuro Ray during the One Year War and it was designed and developed by Tem Ray (Amuro Ray’s Father) for the Earth Federation Forces (E.F.F).

Tem Ray was born on Earth, where he lived with his wife Kamaria and their son Amuro. Sometime before the outbreak of the One Year War, Tem was called up by the Earth Federation to do weapons research under the guise of colony construction. He intended to move with his family to Side 7, a space colony, but Kamaria declined, and so only Tem and Amuro moved to Side 7.

He became the chief engineer of Project V; a military armament plan to create the Federation’s first prototype mobile suits, and was to oversee their design, construction and transport to Earth.

Operation V was carried out in secret for months, under the supervision of chief engineer Tem Ray. The result was three prototype mobile suit models, the RX-75 Guntank, RX-77 Guncannon, RX-78 Gundam, and a revolutionary new warship specifically designed to support mobile suits, the Pegasus-class assault carrier (White Base).

The operation tests of the RX-78-02, a prototype MS of the Earth Federation, were carried out in secret, its estimated generator output was from 1000kW to 1400kW, the project target output was to be at least 150% of the RCX-76 Guncannon First Type (Rollout Unit 1).

The High Grade RX-78-2 Origin is a Bandai 1/144 scale kit released in mid-March 2020. It is relatively new kit and the kits from origin storyline are produced using new moulding; but it still uses polycaps, but it has a lot more articulation to allow more dynamic posing when compared to the older HG versions.

The above is my side-by-side comparisons to my HG MS-06S Char’s Zaku 2. The Zaku 2 does look bulkier than the RX-78-2.

TIP JAR!

If you are inspired by my projects, please consider supporting me by tipping me. A small amount from you means a large step for me. The tips will be used to help me to fund this blog and additional tools and paints to keep this site going. Thank you in advance and much appreciated!

$1.00

The retail price for this kit is about ¥2,300 which is more expensive than the MS-06S Char Zaku 2 at ¥1,700; but this Origin RX-78-2 kit is considered one of the best HG versions of the RX-78 with lots of surface details and options to make it either an “Early” or “Middle” Type.

Accessories are somewhat limited for such an expensive kit (I would have hoped for more); it only comes with 2 Beam Rifles (Early and Middle Type), Hyper Bazooka, shield, and many of options parts.

This kit is my submission for OtakuME online 2021 Competition for “Out-of-Box”; which is basically no modification but straight out a painting competition. Thus, I picked this Origin version of RX-78-2 because it has lots of surface details and hence I am able to use contrasting colours to help bring out the parts separations and surface details.

That said, this is not my first attempt of an Origin RX-78-2. My first kit was customised to look like a G3 variant with a GM3 backpack to give it a steer towards developing into a RX-178 Gundam Mk 2. The other coloured in Green Camouflage was my EG RX-78-2; this was submitted to Otaku 2020 Painting Competiton.

My other RX-78-2 was inspired by Psycho Gundam colour which I bought because I wanted the core fighter that comes along with it. My first RX-78-2 is the Revive Version which I painted it in its traditional livery. Surface details of the older HG kits are lacking but they are considered not bad in their time. The Beyond Global RX-78-2 which I painted it to look like a Thunderbolt Ver, this newish kit is actually the most disappointing version in my opinion.

This build is dedicated to my Father Reverend Dr. Fong Mow Hee and Mother Mdm Yeo Cher Eng; and in many sense my relationship with my Father is similar to Amuro and Tem. My parents as I remembered are always busy with his ministry and work, but they have often made sacrifices to take time to teach me and my siblings several important life skills and shaped me to walk in faith. There are often tears and life felt hard at times, but today looking back that I am able to work as an full-time Engineer and yet moonlight to do Gunpla in itself is quite a gift they has given to me. Thank you Dad and Mum!

II bought my RX-78-2 kit from Galactic Toys! Do yourself a favour, if you want an HG RX-78-2, but the Origin kit, it is better than the Global, EG, Revive and HG (unless you want the Core Fighter).
