Bandai HG 1/144 XXXG-01D Gundam Deathscythe

The XXXG-01D Gundam Deathscythe is the second of five Gundams sent to Earth from the Space Colonies in the anime Gundam Wing. The pilot for Deathscythe is Duo Maxwell.

The Gundam Deathscythe was the developed by Professor G, where it is one of the scientists that help developed the prototype Tallgeese and which was later mass produced with watered down capabilities into LEO.

The Deathscythe is one of the 5 Gundams that was build using references and technologies from the Tallgeese. The Deathscythe was build have additional capabilities such as outstanding stealth capabilities, with a pair of Hyper Jammers mounted on its backpack that prevented the Gundam from showing up on radar or visual sensors.

This helps the Deathscythe to become invisible to most electronics and allowed it to sneak into facilities and even right up to enemy mobile suits without being detected. Not only stealth, Deathscythe has the highest speed amongst the original 5 Gundams.

In which, Deathscythe’s battle style revolves around approaching the enemy rapidly, striking and then retreating.

I have customised my Deathscythe with a pair of wings from Destiny Gundam, which I am inspired by the “Angel of Death” look and hence I thought the mechanical wings help give “angelic” feel.

This is a side-by-side comparison to some of my other mobile suit collection from Wing Gundam series. These are my Leos, which I have kit-bashed one of Leo NPD to look like a “Tallgeese”.

I also have a Fenice Wing Gundam, which I painted it back to the original Wing Gundam colours and I do like this kit because it gives the battle damage look and parts replaced from different mobile suits and the dusty brown “cape” makes it look like Exia Repair.

The other mobile suits are my Sandrock, Jiyan Altron, Manganac, Heavyarms, and Endless Wing Gundam.

I have also added some camouflage patterns to the white legs to help give some additional details. This idea is based on the fact the Deathscythe relies on his Hyper Jammers to hide from enemies and hence the camouflage patterns also help him to blend into the background.

TIP JAR: Please buy me a pint!

Building Gunpla is not an easy job! The amount of effort to develop an idea for customisation, painting and masking do take up a lot of time. Sometimes I do even have time for a pint at the local pub! So if you do like my work or are inspired by what you see, please let me know you like it by buying me a pint!

I bought this kit from Galactic Toys back in June 2021 and this is one of Bandai latest kit released in 2021. The kit still uses polycaps, but both elbows and knees are double jointed to give more articulations.

The part separation for this kit is actually quite good; the Gold trims around the shoulder, chest vents are separated with allows for easy painting. That said, the knee and ankle covers are not parts separated hence I have to mask along the edges to give it the gold trim effect I am after.

This is a side-by-side comparison with my Origin RX-78-2 Gundam, and you can see that the Wing Gundam era is slightly smaller and shorter than the UC mobile suits.
